Jakob born 1884 is well documented by attached 1918 draft registration and censuses:

1910 US census, Kenosha, Wisconsin
Jacob Jacobsen 25 born Denmark, to USA 1909, married 1 year
Agnes " 20 born Denmark, to USA 1909, 1 child
Houlga " (son) 2/12 born Wisconsin

1920 US census Caldonia Township, Racine County, Wisconsin
Jacob Jacobson 35 Denmark, to USA 1910, Farmer
Agnes " 30 Denmark, to USA 1910
Holger " 9 Wisconsin
Henry " 6 "
Annie " 2/12 "

1930 US census Caldonia Township, Racine County, Wisconsin
Jacob H. Jacobs 45 Denmark, to USA 1909, Blacksmith
Agnes " 40 "
Henry E. " 16 Wisconsin
Anna M. " 12 "
Calvin " 5 "

mail fra Homer Ficken 28.09.2007:

Jacob Jacobsen's 1909 passenger list attached, passenger 19, destination Kenosha, Wisconsin and very likely the Agnes Friedricksen, passenger 18 is his future wife, probably met on ship and married after arrival.

(Large file but sending whole page in case you recognize other names aboard. Can reduce size and resend if needed)

Have checked the 1917/18 draft registration cards for the other brothers, but don't find any of them, any state, so if immigrated probably after the war. If some of the sisters immigrated, they might be married by years of the censuses, so hard to identify.

mail fra Homer Ficken 01.10.2007:

Found in a Kenosha County, Wisconsin marriage List:

Jacobsen, Jacob Gottfredsen, Irene 10/15/1909

Despite first name "Irene" I feel this confirms that the Agnes Godfredsen listed consecutively with Jacob on the 1909 passenger list travelled to Wisconsin with him and married him there, where they appear in 1910 census.

I have not yet had any response from the Racine County obituary lookup request.

mail fra Homer Ficken 01.10.2007:

And think this is Jacob's wife in AO, Frederikshavn/Horns/Hjørring 1888-1891, opslag 59 #56:

born 7 July 1889, Agnes Kirstine Petrine Gottfredsen, parents Christian Theodor Gottfredsen and Dorothea Caroline Sørensen.

And on DDD:

Hjørring, Horns, Frederikshavn Købstad, Frydenstrand, Fors no. 331, , Kvisten, 2, FT-1890
Name: Age: Marital status: Occupation in household: Occupation: Birth place:
Theodor Christian Gottfredsen 23 Gift Husfader Fisker Frederikshavn
Dorthea Karoline Gottfredsen, født Sørensen 30 Gift Husmoder Hjørring
Agnes Christine Petrina Gottfredsen under et aar Gift Barn Frederikshavn

(On the passenger list in May 1909 she's listed as age 19 years, 10 months, from Fr. havn)

I was curious to see if one of her names might be Irene, although I've not seen that as a Danish name. More likely, the clerk just misunderstood and recorded name wrong, or the person who transcribed the data misread the handwritten record.

If I can help you in Denmark pleace say so. I visit the archive in Viborg a couple of times every year. I take pictures of protocols and churchbooks. The churchbooks later than 1892. So far I have Børglum, Vrensted, Furreby, Harritslev, Vennebjerg, Jetsmark. All in Hjørring County. Normally I get around 2000 pages pro visit in Viborg.
Thanks but using the wonderful DDD and AO data, and with help from the great Danish volunteers, I have traced my wife's grandparents who came to USA from Brede, Tønder Amt in 1880 back to 1700s.

This must be Jacob Jacobsen's son Henry, in Social Security death index:
[Henry Jacobsen, born 4 November 1913, died August 1981 Franksville, Racine County, Wisconsin]
If I ever get responses to my lookup requests maybe it will list him and his children if any.

And here's a link with a poor picture of Jacob and his blacksmith shop:

mail fra Homer Ficken 03.10.2007:

Good news, I received obituaries of Jacob Jacobsen and August Christensen, attached.

Jacob's lists his sisters Ann Linder of Chicago and Clara Jorgensen of Florida:

Social Security index shows:

Anna Linder born 16 October 1888 (a year off) died December 1973 in Brookfield, Cook County, Illinois.

Klara Jorgensen born 23 February 1903, died September 1983 in Pompano Beach, Florida.

But no Klara on your list, and must be Elna Alvilda born 21 March 1903: Maybe this is her baptism date instead of birthdate?

Another outdated list shows Clara Jacobsen Jorgensen age 103 with past residences Syrna Beach and Daytona Beach Florida and Bedminster New Jersey.

I'll now look for more info of Anna and Klara, and will also post Jacob's obit on the forum, in case someone recognizes them.

HRF

mail fra Homer Ficken 06.10.2007:

So apparently Anna Caroline was married twice, or Christian Johansen changed his name to Linder, which seems unlikely. I have asked an Illinois volunteer for her obituary, but no response yet, and that seems best possibility of learning more, unless you hear from Floyd Jacobsen with details.

Clara's husband appears to have been Vilhelm Jorgensen born 13 February 1906 who died 9 March 2000 in Dattona Beach, their son a Richard Winther Jorgensen born 1937.

I got a reply from the Florida lookup volunteer I asked for Clara's obituary, advising she had placed my request on her "waiting list" so it may be some time before we learn more. And also asked another volunteer for Vilhelm's obit (he died in a different county) and was told "it will be a week or two"

As I receive the requested obits I will send them to you and also post them on the forum.

mail fra Homer Ficken 06.10.2007:

I have emailed a Richard W. Jorgensen in California who appears to be Richard Winther Jorgensen son of Clara Jacobsen & Vilhelm Jorgensen. If he replies, maybe he will identify Clara's relationship for certain.

It is now owned by a grandson Benny Jacobsen and his wife Lene. He could help me. Clara is the daughter of Marie and they had visited her and her husband, Vilhelm Jorgensen in Florida in 1986. Clara and Vilhelm had two children, Richard Jorgensen who is a pilote maybe living in LA and Diane married to an Italian named John. They couldn't remember the last name but it might be something like Angelli or Antellini.

You certainly have found the right family. If you hear from Richard please ask him if he can see his mother and Anna Caroline on the picture I have attached.

So the obit was wrong and she was a niece of Jacob's: Do you think Marie came to USA, or just Clara and husband? No response from Richard yet.

According to Benny, whom I visited yesterday, Clara was considered as a sister. My grandma did say three siblings but couldn't point out no. 3, I guess thats because Claras name wasn't on my list as a sister. Thats probably why she is called a sister in the obit too.

She probably grew up by her grandparents, which was very normal for children born out of wedlock.
The youngest child of Hansine and Benthin was born in 1904 and Clara was born in 1905, so they probably just felt it was natural to call her sister. No, Marie didn't leave Denmark - as far as I know.

Yes, that makes sense. It will be interesting to see if Anna Caroline's obit lists a sister Clara, if I hear from that request.

mail fra Homer Ficken 08.10.2007:

This seems to confirm Anna Jacobsen Johansen later married Julius Linder, but can't find either in 1920:

1930 census Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio:
Julius Linder 46 Sweden, to US 1904
Anna (wife) 41 Denmark, to US 1913
Dora (daughter) 17 Illinois, both parents born Sweden
Holger Jacobsen (nephew) 20 Wisconsin, parents born Denmark

Dora must be Julius' son by a first marriage, and
Holger must be Jacob Jacobsen's son age 9 in 1920 Wisconsin census.

Anna's first husband may have died in Denmark before she came to US?

Now I have the year of her emigration. The Historical Archive in Hjørring is open the first Saturday every month and they the emigration lists on microfiche. I will see if I can find her in 1913. The death of her husband I have to go to Viborg to find. I don't know when I will be able to go there again. Hopefully soon.

They were apparently married 1920, as the 1930 census has a separate column for "age when married" which lists 36 for Julius and 31 for Anna.

mail fra Homer Ficken 09.10.2007:

Using this search: http://probate.cuyahogacounty.us/ml/pa.urd/MLIW1000 I get the marriage of Anna Johansen to Alfred J. Linder, but does not give date so I have asked a lookup volunteer for that. (WW1 draft card shows his full name was Alfred Julius Linder born 12 July 1882)

And in 1923-24 they must have visited their homelands as found attached passenger list showing them returning to Lakewood, Ohio.

mail fra Homer Ficken 09.10.2007:

(I have asked for the marriage license copy) Apparently Anna and Julius had no children.

mail fra Homer Ficken 09.10.2007:

This would be Alfred Julius:

Name: Alfred Linder
SSN: 294-30-3742
Last Residence: Florida
Born: 12 Jul 1882
Died: Dec 1964
State (Year) SSN issued: Ohio (1951-1952 )

Julius and first wife were apparently divorced: In 1910 Julius, wife Josephine, and a brother Carl Linder were in Chicago. By 1920 the wife Josephine, listed as divorced and the daughter born about 1913 Illinois are in Akron, Ohio. The brother Carl Linder is also in Akron, but haven't found Julius. Maybe Julius and Anna were on a honeymoon trip when census taken...

mail fra Homer Ficken 10.10.2007:

This confirms she's the right Anna, and that first husband Christian Johansen died.

Have not heard from Richard Jorgensen, and suspect I won't. Some do not want their privacy threatened, and since we now know his mother Clara's background, he may consider it a "family secret"...

But in a week or two we should get Clara's obit from Florida.

mail fra Homer Ficken 11.10.2007:

Anna's first husband Christian Johansen apparently came to USA first, as I found Anna on the attached 1911 passenger list (2 pages) and 2nd page says she was coming to join him in Racine, so he must have died in USA between then and 1920 (when she remarried in Ohio)

What age was Christian? Maybe I can find when he immigrated.

Do you understand what I just wrote, It isn't correct English but.......
So, Christian must have come to USA between Feb 1910 and May 1911 when Anna left, and I will search that period.

Your English is fine, better than many in USA!

Found her 1927 passenger list, attached, #19. Who was the "brother-in-law Knud Petersen" of Flushing, New York listed as a relative she was joining?

There are a couple of Knud/Knute Petersen/Pedersen in 1930 New York census, but born Norway.

Your work is fatastic. I don't know of a brother in law Knud Petersen, but as Benthin is listed as her father, Knud Petersen must be her biological uncle and Benthins son in law. Then one more of the girls must have emigrated. Maybe they returned to Denmark later?
Are you certain her mother Marie didn't emigrate? Maybe Knud was Clara's father or stepfather.

But I don't find a Knud Petersen in Flushing NY 1930 census, and think this must be Clara:

1930 Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio
Clara Jacobsen 23 Denmark, to US 1927, beauty parlor hairdresser

This is county where Anna was 1930 so perhaps why Clara ended up there.

Maybe I will get obituaries of Clara and Vilhelm soon to explain things, but the Klara listed as born 23 Feb 1903 and died Sep 1985 may be wrong person. While it's not unusual for birth year to be off in censuses and death records, it is almost always later than actual, not earlier and at least birth month should be correct. There is a Clara Jorgensen listed as born 1 Sep 1911 who died 1986 in Ohio that might be a possibility.

I can not find Christian Johansen's passenger list. Maybe you can find when he left in the records at Hjørring you were going to check for Anna.

I'm getting old, you were born between my two youngest sons! (1958 & 1961)

If Marie was there with a husband Søren, it must have been someone else Clara was joining, unless Marie remarried. Can you account for the other sisters' marriages?

This afternoon and early evening I have visited this old lady and she said the third one was Kristece Tomine Jakobsen. As far as she knew Kristence died rather young.

Sounds like you had a full day! Kristence must have married a Knud Petersen and died soon after Clara got to USA: I found Kristence Petersen returning to Flushing NY 1929 with a son Gunnar V. born NY 24 Sep 1926, attached.

But, above says she was first in USA 1913, and can't find her as Jacobsen or Petersen in a 1913 passenger list, or either her or son Gunnar in any 1930 census, the year after they returned...

So I have sent the puzzle pieces to a volunteer in Queens County, NY who might be able to help and at least your latest info has confirmed the other sister who immigrated.

HRF

Since Clara remarried in Ohio, I thought maybe Christian Johansen died there, but the researcher there found no record of him, so he probably died in Racine.

Hi Bill,

I'm helping a Janne Jacobsen of Denmark trace relatives who came to USA, and found Gunnar listed on a 1929 passenger list (attached), returning to Flushing NY from a trip to Denmark with his mother, Kristence Jacobsen Petersen. Kristence was a sister of Janne's greatgrandfather.

Another sister, Clara Jacobsen is on a 1927 passenger list, and listed "brother-in-law Knud Petersen of Flushing NY" as her destination in USA.

These are the only clues I've found but assume without proof that Knud Petersen was Kristence's husband and Gunnar's father.

Can you confirm above? I can't find any of them on the 1930 census, but an elderly relative in Denmark thinks Kristence "died fairly young."
